Skarabee's (Stuart Chalmers) musical training began
with piano at 12 but a passion for rock music meant he quickly moved onto electric guitar. His love for music took him to places such as Cuba and India where he learnt the sitar for several weeks. Inspired by a course on sound engineering and music technology at the Birmingham Academy of Sound he started using computers to create
his own music. Stuart discovered electronic/acoustic improvisation music soon after and this led him to use pedals, everyday objects and extended instrument techniques when recording and performing.
His work has been played on Arctic Circle Radio and Furthernoise, an experimental music programme on Bristol Community radio.Chalmers played his first concert at the Cube Microplex in Bristol in 2007 and has continued to perform regularly throughout the UK. As well as his solo work, Stuart has been involved with the Free Improvisation collectives Bristol Cube Orchestra and Oxford Improvisers Orchestra and was a regular player at Random Function,
the experimental electronic music event in Bristol. He currently plays solo and as part of the electronic group Ampersand based In Birmingham.
